Location Characteristics: The name of the town, Kill Devil Hills, is odd but the story behind it brings to life the folk history of the area. Rum was the drink of choice back in the colonial times. A ship wrecked on the shores of Kill Devil Hills laden with a shipment of rum. The locals scavenged the shipment as was customary in those days and hid the rum behind the sand dunes where the Wright brothers later flew the first plane. The rum was strong enough to "kill the devil" and the sand dunes where the rum was hidden was nicknamed Kill Devil Hills and the name has stuck ever since.
Kill Devil Hills is home to an encompassing array of housing opportunities. Out of all the Outer Banks towns, Kill Devil Hills has the largest number of year round residents. For those looking to retire or move to the Outer Banks, towns with a higher number of year round residents often offer more year round services. Many different styles of homes can be found from the ocean to soundside, including a mixture of condos and townhomes. Additionally, Kill Devil Hills is likely to have the most affordable prices in all of the Outer Banks. Being one of the first areas to develop, lot sizes here are generally smaller than other places. Kill Devil Hills is the site of the Wright Brothers National Memorial, commemorating Wilbur and Orville Wrights’ first successful power-driven airplane flight on December 17, 1903. Much of Kill Devil Hills is protected from development. The two largest tracts are the national park and conservation land. The Wright Brothers National Memorial Park consists of over 350 acres of prime beach real estate and the Nags Head Woods Preserve owned by the Nature Conservancy is well over 160 acres.
